If you’ve been watching television lately, or surfing the Internet, you may have noticed that Section 101 client Penatonix have a new album out. In fact, it seems many people noticed since PTX VOLUME 3 debuted on the Billboard Album charts at #5 –really impressive!
While we can’t take all the credit – ok, we can’t really take any of the credit – what we can be ultra-proud of is the group’s website. When Pentatonix first came to our attention, they were what we would consider a ‘baby band.’ Yes, they’d won “The Sing Off,” but there are many talented people who win reality show competitions and are never heard from again. We could tell from the start that Pentatonix were going to be big. They acted like rock stars, which isn’t to say that they were jerks; it was actually the opposite. They were very focused, planned for very big things and didn’t short change any part of their careers, including their vision for their website.
When their management contacted us, it was because they had an upcoming tour and wanted to make sure everyone knew about it, so we started off with just a splash page that featured their tour dates. What they learned from this was that as they grew, and there was more information to post, highlighting the most important pieces via a splash page resonated with their fans. That’s something the group has continued to do, and it has really worked for them. Whatever the biggest news of the moment is, it usually appears on a stand-alone splash page.
Another thing the band did right away is highlight their amazing relationship with YouTube viewers. We made sure their YouTube channel was integrated into their website, since their music is something that should be equally experienced via audio and visual. In many ways, YouTube has become the second arm of their career. It has been very exciting for us to see how far Pentatonix has come, which is best reflected in the production value of their videos! Pentatonix has the #14 Most Subscribed music channel on ALL of YouTube, ahead of Maroon 5, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. They’ve also gone from being a relatively unknown act – we were so excited to have them play at our Quantum Collective showcase during SXSW in 2013 (see photo above) – to an act that’s signed to a major label and touring internationally.
Everyone at Section 101 is truly thrilled for Pentatonix’s success. They’ve worked really hard, and they’ve worked really smart, too. They have always played to their strengths, worked with creative people and exposed themselves to alternative ways of getting their music out there. Make sure you take a peek at the website, it might give you some ideas to mention when you call us to build your big band website soon!
