“All right stop, collaborate and listen”
Way back in the summer of 1990, when Vanilla Ice (http://www.vanillaice.com/) unleashed the nugget known as “Ice Ice Baby” (http://s101.ws/3p8l), who among us knew that he’d be throwing down such words of wisdom?
We’ve had collaboration on the brain for a few days here at Section 101. We just finished attending the CBGB Festival (http://www.cbgb.com/) and CMJ (http://www.cmj.com/marathon/) Music Marathon. Between hosting demos for people interested in our product, having our artists showcase at both Festivals, hosting a cool mixer or two, AND being asked to be part of one on one mentoring sessions at CMJ, we’ve been, well, collaborating. We’re always interested in what people have to say about the Section 101 product, whatever the feedback. We love working with people who do what we do. They aren’t competitors – they’re smart people doing what they love, like we are. Section 101 focuses on music websites, and we feel like we have the expert knowledge to really give our client base an incredible experience when they create their own site. We firmly believe that every one has a niche they excel at.
Our client, Jonatha Brooke (http://jonathabrooke.com/), is a great example of that. She isn’t just a kick-butt singer-songwriter; She has been a critically acclaimed artist for many years, and has always been held in the highest esteem not only as a songwriter, but also as an innovator. Her website, powered by Section 101 technology, showcases this. She displays photos, her journal, her music and is currently helming a successful Kickstarter campaign for a musical she is writing called “My Mother has Four Noses.” (http://www.jonathabrooke.com/fournoses) She has also recently collaborated with Katy Perry (www.katyperry.com/), she of the recent #1 hit “Roar (http://s101.ws/3p8m).” You may not think so at first thought, but they have a lot in common: they are both strong, smart female singer-songwriters with a parallel view of the world. Said Jonatha of their work together, “We wrote a song called "Choose your Battles." We spent a couple days in LA working at Greg Wells's (www.gregwells.net/) studio. It's on the "deluxe" version of both digital and physical releases of PRISM (http://s101.ws/3pd5)!!!!! LOVE her big time! She's the real dealio!.” Katy recently tweeted about Jonatha’s album, “10 Cent Wings” (http://s101.ws/3p8n) and said it was “perfectly put.” Not only are they collaborators, but supporters of each other’s work,
Collaboration, when approached with an open mind, is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. You will almost always learn from it, grown from it, and have success from it. Try it out and see!
